SCOUT Surgical Guidance System
Community Investment: $82,750 Dr. Sharon Chiu is one of only two physicians in Saint John who perform breast cancer surgeries. Dr. Chiu and her colleague, Dr. Mowatt, are deeply committed to providing timely diagnoses and life-saving care for breast cancer patients. However, to continue delivering the best possible treatment, they need our help in acquiring a SCOUT Surgical Guidance System for the Surgery Department. Without the SCOUT Surgical Guidance System, breast cancer surgeries rely on an outdated wire localization method developed in the 1970s. This process requires a radiologist to insert a hooked wire into the breast on the day of surgery to mark the tumor. It is painful, poses a risk of displacement, complicates scheduling, and can lead to the unnecessary removal of healthy tissue. The SCOUT Surgical Guidance system offers a modern, patient-friendly alternative. It uses a tiny radar-based reflector, smaller than a grain of rice, that is placed in the breast days or even weeks before surgery through a procedure similar to a simple injection. During surgery, the reflector sends a signal to a console, guiding the surgeon with unmatched precision to precisely target affected breast tissue within 1 mm. In 2024, Saint John recorded 312 biopsies and more than 170 breast cancer diagnoses. Investing in the SCOUT system will deliver significant benefits across our region, including:
The total community investment needed for the SCOUT Surgical Guidance System is $82,750. We hope you’ll agree with Dr. Chiu and our medical team that supporting SCOUT technology and women’s health is a meaningful investment in the well-being of our loved ones and our community. St. Josephs Health and Aging Program: iPads
Cost: $1000 x 5 = $5,000 We know that the support of family and friends is important during hospital stays and necessary for the healing process. The hospital community often follows strict infection control precautions, which, at times, will necessitate controlled or restricted in-person visits. Having iPads available on our five Health and Aging units will provide the next best thing to in-person visits when precautions are in place. The addition of iPads provides enhanced care, helping our patients stay connected with family while in the hospital. DONATE: Click the donate button and select Health & Aging Ipads. |
St. Joseph's Leisure and Wellness Garden
In 2009, a piece of St. Joseph’s Hospital’s inner-city property was transformed from grassy hill and parking lot into a beautiful Wellness Garden. Fresh air, sunshine, flowers, and birds make the garden an oasis for patients, families, and staff. The garden brings smiles and renewed hope to those who need it - making it a special sanctuary for those who visit. Your donations to the Leisure and Wellness Garden help St. Joe's Foundation to maintain and augment this special oasis. DONATE: Click the donate button and select Health & Aging Ipads. |

Prostate Ultrasound with MRI Fusion
Cost - $200,000 We did it... together! St. Joseph's Prostate Clinic will be transforming the lives of men in our community with new prostate ultrasound equipment. The new prostate ultrasound with MRI fusion is less invasive, more precise, decreases the risk of infection, and can yield long-term cost savings. Enhanced imaging enables the detection of smaller and clinically significant prostate tumors at an earlier stage, resulting in better patient outcomes. With the addition of this technology, St. Joseph's Hospital will be able to provide significant benefits to the entire region. |
