Laurie Flood’s Compassionate Care Fund
This Fund proudly honours the legacy of former Executive Director, Laurie Flood. Laurie dedicated her life to improving healthcare in our community and to helping those who needed an extra hand. Held in trust by St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, it is dedicated to bringing comfort and care to patients and caregivers at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Established as an ongoing recognition of Laurie’s spirit, this fund carries forward her kindness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to serving those who needed it most.

About Laurie

Laurie (Laura) Ann Flood served as the Executive Director of St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation for 21 years, leaving an enduring influence on the hospital, patients, staff and the wider Saint John region. A pillar of both family and community, Laurie was the guiding force behind the Foundation, defined by her unwavering commitment to improving healthcare in the greater Saint John community.

Throughout her life's journey, Laurie demonstrated how to live authentically and embrace life with strength, humor, dignity, and grace. Her impact on family, friends, and community was broad and indelible. Her strong belief and connection to the mission of the Sisters of Charity fostered her conviction to pay special attention to patients who needed extra help.

How the Fund Fosters Compassionate Care

The fund supports meaningful and practical patient-centric initiatives—to enhance medical care, ease suffering, improve patient and caregiver comfort, and above all, offer compassion, dignity, and relief when it’s needed most. Focused on patients in need, the fund may provide:
  • Emergency support and comfort items for pediatric patients.
  • Essential care such as medications, medical supplies and transportation assistance for patients in need;
  • Hospital equipment that enhances patient care and comfort;
  • Improvements to Laurie's Garden, a dedicated green space at St. Joseph’s which provides a peaceful, healing space for patients, caregivers, families, and staff.
  • The fund may also reach beyond the hospital — supporting urgent health and wellness needs in the community, especially for children and seniors, whose well-being Laurie held close to her heart.

Fund Management

As patient needs arise, disbursements from Laurie Flood's Compassionate Care Fund will be made by St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, with oversight and approval from the Executive Committee and where needed, the Board of Directors. In addition to ongoing disbursements, applications are also welcomed at any time and will be reviewed twice each year in April and November. Where possible, a representative of the Flood family will provide insight, helping to reinforce the principles of compassion and service that guided Laurie throughout her life.

With this fund, Laurie wished to invite everyone to think of how they can help those who most need it. Please consider giving generously to honour Laurie’s dedication to improving healthcare in our community.
